Sunday 4 November marked the first day of official gathering for crew members enrolled in the 2018 Rallye des Iles du Soleil on La Palma Island going to Marie-Galante.
Located on the East Coast of the island, in the historic capital of Santa Cruz, the Marina La Palma team is taking care of us to offer the best experience to all the participants.
With 180 berths and perfect facilities for sailors, the first social event was organised on the balcony of El Carajo restaurant overlooking the marina. Further to the welcome speech made by Grand Pavois Organisation, a general briefing revealing the programme was done with everyone.
Indeed, the week prior to the departure is the opportunity to control boat equipments in order to cross the Atlantic with confidence. The aim is to check security throughout 188 items. A medical briefing is also done aboard each boat by the appointed doctor to remind good practices and First Aid in case emergency.
End in the morning, 2 boats arrived in the marina : the Schooner Bielle Marie Galante coming from La Rochelle in Charente-Maritime followed by Maremosso, a Pogo 50 with their German crew who left Marina Lanzarote, the day before, departure harbour for the 2017 Rally.
With a calendar coincidence, The Route du Rhum departure occured the same day; also matching with the anniversary of the Discovery of the Guadeloupe Islands by Christopher Colombus and his 17 caravels. Participants got the chance to watch the departure of this 11th edition starting in Saint-Malo ending in Guadeloupe.
At the end of the day, the "Ti Punch" (special Caribbean rum beverage) was served in the HQ "El Carajo" in a friendly atmosphere, watchword of this reunion.
The ongoing week will be ponctuated by social events and excursions organised La Palma Island and local authorities that we will happily share with you with pictures and stories.
